Histories of Torres Strait Islander interaction and mythological geography

Archaeologists and anthropologists have long been interested in the study of past human interaction. In Indo-Pacific, research has focused on age processes by which islands were settled role that intermediary communities played these histories. Torres Strait, Australia’s northern border, represents one such frontier zone. For millennia this 48,000 km2 area (containing at least 274 islands) separated predominately horticultural pottery-using Melanesians hunter-gatherer Australians, a contrast considered some to be ‘starker more perplexingly than anywhere else world’ (Walker 1972:405). Mirroring archaeological explanations theoretical interests elsewhere, Coral Sea chronicles transitioned between those prioritising large-scale migration narratives entanglement periphery ancient globalisations. This paper develops theme entanglement, exploring distinctive regionally diverging histories innovation interaction occurring Western, Central Eastern Strait. We suggest traditional histories, involving wandering trackways Culture Heroes, provide useful insights into deep history interactions, thereby helping us understand patterns observed linguistic record.
